INCARNATE CONFERENCE 2007

"it's not WHAT you do...it's THE WAY that you do it!"

A report on the Incarnate Conference from 7-9 June

At the beginning of June we held our second conference at Bethany Christian Centre in Durham to gather people with a passion for the vulnerable and hurting with the theme of 'Its not what you do it’s the way that you do it'. This year Tony Campolo was our main speaker who spoke with characteristic fire and humour about some of the things that he is involved in and how God requires us all to be involved with those on the margins of our society. Steve Chalke spoke about his dream to see every church being at the hub of its community and Tom Wright (Bishop of Durham) looked at the theological reasons for caring for our neighbour. Malcolm Duncan of Faithworks and Mike Royal of the Lighthouse Group also spoke about their experiences of being 'change agents' that were very moving and challenging. There were a number of seminars run by people involved in local churches and projects to help equip delegates practically in different aspects of caring for the poor together with an extensive exhibition that formed a focal point for networking and connecting with other from our region.

"I found the conference inspiring and challenging but the best bit for me was the sense of working together with christians from different denominations to bring God’s Kingdom here on earth in practical and tangible ways. It felt like the beginnings of the fulfillment of the picture that was shared over a year ago at the City Hall of a tall ship with many sails of different shapes and size that God was calling to line up in the same direction. Let us continue to act on God’s instruction to "remember the poor" and look to see where we can do this together with others."
